Harrogate England in a nutshell
Harrogate is a town in North Yorkshire that grew up around its mineral springs. William Slingsby found a spring here in 1571, and the Royal Baths opened on 23 July 1897. Today the Turkish Baths are the part of that building that still works as a spa, and the domed Royal Pump Room next door is a museum about the spa years.
Around the centre you find two large green spaces, Valley Gardens and The Stray, and a short walk through the Pinewoods leads to RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Beyond the town, Knaresborough, Fountains Abbey, Brimham Rocks and Ripley Castle are all within a day trip, and the Yorkshire Dales begin to the west. This guide covers all of it, with prices in British pounds (£) as published for 2026. They change, so check before you go.

Our picks: Harrogate and Yorkshire tours
For a day in the Dales the audio-guide trip from York is the simplest start, and the food tour is the easiest way to see Harrogate itself. The garden ticket is the cheap way into Harlow Carr, and Harewood is the choice for a big house and grounds.
Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide and Viator. Prices are indicative starting prices in British pounds (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

A few things to know before you go
Changes that matter for planning in 2026.
No Christmas Fayre in 2026
The Harrogate Christmas Fayre of earlier years is not part of the 2026 programme. A different Christmas market takes place in Valley Gardens on 5 and 6 December 2026.
Christmas in Harrogate →Ripley Castle tours are back
Guided tours of the castle run again in 2026, Tuesday to Saturday, and are bookable online or on arrival, depending on availability.
Ripley Castle →Museum prices are £4.40
The Royal Pump Room Museum and Knaresborough Castle both charge £4.40 for adults.
Pump Room →Building work at Fountains Abbey
The Studley entrance is closed for building work, and there is no exit from the Water Garden to the Deer Park. Use the Visitor Centre or West Gate and expect a 2.5 mile Water Garden round.
Fountains Abbey →Summer buses are seasonal
The direct bus 825 to Fountains Abbey and Brimham is a summer service, so check the timetable before you plan around it. Bus 74 to Grassington runs on Saturdays all year.
Yorkshire Dales →Pay for parking on arrival
The Jubilee and Victoria car parks ask you to pay when you arrive and enter your registration. Do not plan to pay on the way out.
Getting there →Harrogate: frequently asked questions
Is this the official Harrogate website?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the council, the tourism organisations, the Turkish Baths, the RHS, the National Trust or any tour company. Prices and times change, so confirm them before you travel.
Do I need a visa or ETA for the UK?
Most German and US visitors on a normal tourist trip need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which costs £20 in 2026. It is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, and the Home Office advises applying at least 3 working days before you travel. Children need their own. An ETA does not guarantee entry.
How do I get from the airport to Harrogate?
Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is about 12 miles (19 km) away, roughly 20 minutes by taxi or car. The A2 airport bus takes about 31 to 37 minutes. A taxi to the town is around £35 as a guide, so ask for the price first. See getting to Harrogate.
Can I get to Knaresborough without a car?
Yes. A direct Northern train takes about 9 minutes, and bus 1 also links the two towns. From the station the castle is about 10 minutes uphill, and from the bus station about 5 minutes. See Knaresborough.
Is there a Christmas market in Harrogate in 2026?
The former Christmas Fayre does not run in 2026, but a Christmas market is planned in Valley Gardens on 5 and 6 December, and an ice rink is planned there from 17 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. See Christmas in Harrogate.
