A Yorkshire itinerary from Harrogate

Harrogate is a good base because trains and buses reach most of the region. In one town you have the Turkish Baths, the Royal Pump Room museum, Valley Gardens and RHS Garden Harlow Carr. A short train ride takes you to Knaresborough or York. Fountains Abbey, Brimham Rocks and the Dales are easier with a car, though some are possible by bus or on a guided day trip, see our Yorkshire Dales tours from Harrogate.

The plans below are our own suggestions for 1 to 4 days, not timetables. Journey times are examples from 2026 and move with traffic and the day of the week. Check the season before you go, because bus lines and opening hours change in winter. See the weather and best time to visit for the month that suits you.

Day by day

Each day can stand alone.

Day 1: Harrogate

Start at the Royal Pump Room museum, open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 to 16:30, adult entry £4.40. Walk through Valley Gardens and on through the Pinewoods to RHS Garden Harlow Carr, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km), where day tickets cost from £13.60 online in 2026. Book a Turkish Baths session for the evening if you like: £29 or £39 depending on the day, minimum age 16.

Royal Pump Room →

Day 2: Knaresborough and Fountains Abbey

Take the 9-minute train to Knaresborough for the castle, entry £4.40, and the four-arch viaduct over the River Nidd. Rowing boats run from March to October. Fountains Abbey is a separate trip: adult entry is £21 in 2026, and the Studley Royal entrance has building works, so the water garden round is 2.5 miles with no exit to the Deer Park. The direct bus 825 runs in summer only, so in winter go by car, tour or via Ripon on bus 36 and then bus 139, which runs Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

Day 3: the Dales or York

By car, Grassington is about 29 minutes from Harrogate, Malham about 42 minutes or longer, and Aysgarth Falls about 48 minutes. Bus 74 runs on Saturdays all year: Harrogate 9:20, Grassington 11:10, return 17:00, arriving 18:39. For York, the train takes 41 minutes.

Day 4: the coast

Whitby is about 1 hour 23 minutes by car, a planning guide that does not include traffic or parking. Treat it as a long day trip and leave early.

England garden trips: Harlow Carr and Studley Royal

Two gardens, two separate tickets.

If gardens are the point of your trip, treat RHS Garden Harlow Carr and Studley Royal as separate visits. Harlow Carr day tickets cost £13.60 to £17.20 online and £18.40 at the gate, with children aged 5 to 16 at £6. Entry to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal costs £21 for adults and £10.50 for children aged 5 to 17 without the optional Gift Aid donation. Memberships differ, so check what yours covers. The walk from Valley Gardens to Harlow Carr does not replace a transfer to Fountains Abbey.

Yorkshire road trip tips

If you plan a Yorkshire trip by car.

There is no fixed best route, so build your own around the days above. Allow time for parking: Yorkshire Dales National Park car parks charge £3.80 for up to two hours and £7 for up to 24 hours in 2026, and sleeping in a car or camping in these car parks is not allowed. In the Dales, cattle can stand on paths: keep away from cows with calves. For Fountains Abbey, deer are most active in October and November, so keep dogs on a short lead.
