Yorkshire Dales tours from Harrogate
The Yorkshire Dales National Park was founded in 1954 and covers 2,179 km². Most of its best-known places lie west and north of Harrogate: Grassington, Malham Cove and Aysgarth Falls. A guided day trip solves the main problem of the Dales, which is that buses are few and some run only in summer.
Tour offers differ by season, meeting point and length, so read each one before you book. This page explains the places a day trip usually covers and compares a tour with doing the Dales by bus or by car. For towns and sights closer to Harrogate, see things to do near Harrogate.

What a Dales day trip usually includes
The places most trips are built around.
Grassington
A village with a cobbled market square and shops, and a base for Upper Wharfedale. It is a common lunch stop.
Malham Cove
A limestone cliff, reached on a footpath that gets steeper towards the top. The path to the foot of the cliff is easier than the limestone pavement above. Cattle sometimes graze on the access route; keep away from cows with calves and do not walk between them.
Aysgarth Falls
Three cascades on the River Ure in Wensleydale, with a national park centre, a café and a car park. The water runs stronger after rain. The park authority gives no swimming advice for these falls, and cold water and currents are real risks in Dales rivers.
Fountains Abbey and Brimham Rocks
Some trips from Harrogate swing past these two instead of the Dales proper. Each has its own page with prices and rules.
Fountains Abbey →Tour, bus or car
Three ways to reach the Dales from Harrogate in 2026.
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Guided day trip | Several places in one day, no driving | Fixed schedule; check the meeting point and season |
| Bus 74 (Saturdays all year) | Grassington on a low budget | Leaves Harrogate at 09:20; return from Grassington at 17:00 and back at 18:39 |
| Car | Several stops at your own pace | Park charges, no overnight parking in park car parks |
For most visitors without a car, a guided day trip is the simplest way to see more than one place. On a Saturday on a small budget, bus 74 to Grassington works well, with no booking needed.
What to check before you book
Details that change from trip to trip.
Season and buses
The direct bus 825 is a summer service, and several Dales routes switch to winter timetables, so check the current timetable. A tour with its own vehicle is not affected, but check where it starts.
Meeting point and length
Tours can start in different towns. Make sure the start fits your hotel and the return fits your evening plans.
What the price includes
Entry to Fountains Abbey is £21 for adults in 2026, and the national park's car parks charge £3.80 for up to 2 hours. Check whether the tour covers such costs.
Weather and footwear
Malham and Aysgarth involve uneven ground and can be wet. Bring waterproof layers and sturdy shoes.
Weather →Driving yourself
Rough times and parking charges.
From Harrogate it is roughly 30 minutes to Grassington, 40 to 70 minutes to Malham depending on the route, and about 50 minutes to Aysgarth Falls. These are guide values without traffic or the walk from the car park. The national park authority's car parks charge, in 2026, £3.80 for up to 2 hours, £6 for longer, £7 for up to 24 hours and £20 for 7 days. Pay by card at the machines. Sleeping in a vehicle or camping in these car parks is not allowed.

Yorkshire Dales tours: frequently asked questions
Can I see the Dales by public transport?
Partly. Bus 74 runs on Saturdays all year from Harrogate to Grassington via Bolton Abbey. The direct bus to Fountains Abbey and Brimham is seasonal, and other routes run on reduced winter timetables, so check the current timetable.
How long does it take to get from Harrogate to the Dales?
By car about 30 minutes to Grassington and about 50 minutes to Aysgarth Falls. To Malham, plan 40 to 70 minutes. By bus 74 to Grassington it takes 1 hour 50 minutes.
Can I swim in Dales rivers and waterfalls?
There is no general permission or ban. The park authority warns of cold water, fast changes in water level and hidden hazards, so swimming is at your own risk.
Will I see farm animals on the trail?
On the Malham access route cattle may be present. Walk around cows with calves, and do not enter a field if you feel unsure.
Where are the Dales best seen from?
Grassington suits Wharfedale, Malham the limestone country, and Aysgarth Falls Wensleydale. Each can be a stop on a longer day.
