Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal at a glance

The estate has been owned and managed by the National Trust since 1983, in partnership with English Heritage, which is responsible for conserving the abbey ruins. The World Heritage listing dates from 1986 and covers "Studley Royal Park including the Ruins of Fountains Abbey", so it is larger than the abbey alone.

You do not need to book a normal visit in advance. Special events are handled separately.

Works at Studley Royal: what to know now

Building works change a visit at the moment. At the Studley entrance the tea-room and entry point are closed. The water garden loop is 2.5 miles, and there is no exit from the water garden to the Deer Park. The Visitor Centre and the West Gate work as entrances. The Studley car park and toilets stay open for Deer Park visits. Check the current situation before you travel.

From 2 November 2026 the entry points are open 09:30 to 15:30, and the car parks 09:00 to 17:00. St Mary's Church is closed in winter. Treat 15:30 as the end of entry, not as closing time.

Getting to Fountains Abbey from Harrogate

Bus connections depend on the season.

Summer bus 825

The seasonal bus 825 leaves Harrogate bus station at 10:15 and arrives at 11:05, 50 minutes. It runs in summer only, so check that it is running before you plan around it.

Via Ripon

Take the 36 to Ripon, then the 139, which runs on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The 822 runs via Ripon but is not a daily direct bus from Harrogate.

Bus fares

The 825 charges no more than £3 one way and £1 for under 19s. That applies to that route only.

Ripon: a trip to combine

Ripon has a cathedral in the town centre. Entry is by donation, with £5 suggested. It is open Monday to Saturday 08:00 to 18:00 and Sunday 12:00 to 17:00. Normal visiting pauses during services, and the crypt is reached by stairs and a narrow way in.

Deer and walking

Care is needed in autumn.

The National Trust warns about the deer rut in October and November. Keep dogs on a short lead and keep your distance from the animals. You cannot count on seeing deer. The Studley Royal deer park walk is 3 miles (4.8 km), rated moderate, with uneven ground and drops; the works at the water garden also affect it. More walks are on the Harrogate walks page.
