The Yorkshire Dales from Harrogate
The Yorkshire Dales National Park was founded in 1954 and covers 2,179 square kilometres. Harrogate sits just outside it, so the Dales are an easy day out. Most visitors pick one valley: Upper Wharfedale around Grassington, Malham and its limestone landscape, or Wensleydale with Aysgarth Falls.
You can drive, take a guided Yorkshire Dales day trip or use the Saturday bus. Public transport is thin outside summer, so plan the return journey before you leave.

Yorkshire Dales national park walks and places
What each stop offers.
Grassington
A paved market square, shops and an easy base for Upper Wharfedale. The village is also used as a filming location for the fictional Darrowby. Filming is not something you can count on during your visit.
Malham Cove
A limestone cliff with an access route that gets steeper. The path to the foot of the cliff is easier than the limestone pavement above it. Cattle may stand on the access route, so keep away from cows with calves and do not walk between them.
Aysgarth Falls
Three cascades on the River Ure in Wensleydale, with a national park centre, café and car park. Water flows harder after rain. Do not plan on swimming here.

Water and weather safety
Water levels can change quickly, and the water is cold and can hide hazards. Treat every river and pool with caution. For longer walks near Harrogate, see our walks page.
