Places to stay in Harrogate: how to choose

Harrogate is compact, so the right area depends on how you travel. If you arrive by train and plan day trips, stay near the station. If you came for the gardens and the spa town atmosphere, stay near Valley Gardens. If you want green space on your doorstep, look south of the centre near The Stray. Knaresborough is a separate town with its own streets, a castle and a river, and it works as a quieter base.

This page compares areas, and prices and availability change, so check both with your chosen property. If you want a day out first, see our Yorkshire Dales tours from Harrogate.

Valley Gardens and The Stray →

Near The Stray

The Stray is public grass parkland south of the centre, used for walks, games and picnics. Check the distance to the station and shops, and ask about parking.

Spa breaks

Places to stay in Knaresborough

A smaller town, 9 minutes away by train.

Knaresborough has two kinds of location. The upper town sits around the Market Place and the castle. The riverside lies by the River Nidd below the viaduct. From the station, the castle is about 10 minutes on foot and steeply uphill, so the riverside does not guarantee a level walk. The castle has uneven surfaces and historic steps and limited wheelchair access, which matters if you choose a room nearby.

The Market Place car park charges £0.90 for one hour and £1.70 for two hours in 2026, and a ticket is needed even for the first 20 minutes. Bus line 1 links the town with Harrogate. If you prefer Harrogate for restaurants and gardens and Knaresborough for the view, you can do both in one trip.

Parking when you stay

Check whether your property includes parking.

Street parking in the inner zone costs £2.40 for one hour and £4.70 for two hours, and the outer zone £2.10 and £4.10. Charges apply Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 18:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. The Jubilee car park on Union Street charges £8.20 for four hours and £20.40 for 24 hours. The Victoria car park on East Parade charges £7.50 for four hours and £19 for 24 hours. At both, pay on arrival and enter your registration.
